A List of Writing Prompts

Whether you love to write in a journal, blog, or just like to make up stories in your head, here are some writing prompts to get your creative juices flowing! No rules, no time limit. Just start writing! -Lizzie


  • The room was completely dark, freezing cold, and disturbingly quiet. I jumped suddenly at the sound of...
  • Of all people to walk in at that moment...
  • You are the ruler of your own island in the middle of the ocean. Describe your day in detail.
  • Write a ghost story that includes these things: A lamp, a swing set, a glass jar, and a quaint diner.
  • Go people-watching in a public place. Write a detailed and completely outrageous story about a random person or couple you see.
  • You lose your mind.
  • Take a random character from your favorite TV show and create an alternate plot for them.
  • Put yourself in your favorite book/movie/TV show as the "new neighbor".
  • Each of your pencils/pens has a personality effected by what they have been used to write/draw. Write about it.
  • Write out the life story of a single penny. What events has it witnessed?
  • I walked into my house only to find the last thing I'd ever expect to see...
  • You are a tree in the park, Describe the things you see and hear everyday.
  • Write a story that includes these things: A boat, a lantern, a forest, a cliff, a tent, a mysterious light, and a wolf.
  • Write down an over-heard conversation.
  • Your favorite childhood toy writes you a letter. What does it say and how do you reply?
  • Change the plot of a story you dislike to make it capture your own interest.
  • Rewrite an obscure fairy-tail, make it modern.
  • Re-read a book you've already read, but add your own interesting twists or details to the plot. For example, the story actually takes place it the future on a different planet, or the protagonists are actually the antagonists in your version.
  • Re-read a book you've already read, this time, you are the casting director and all the characters must be played animated characters.
  • The best day ever.
  • Write about the worst day ever, but make it as hilarious as possible.
  • You live in a world where each person has one imaginary friend can be seen and interacted with. Write about it.
  • Write an extremely detailed and exciting story about the most ordinary thing you can think of. For example, a brick.
  • Without any explanation, you are in a long hallway of hundreds of doors that all look different from each other. Each door leads to a different world. Which door do you pick and what does it look like?
